Hobbies are supposed to add something to life—but what happens when they start taking over?
On this episode of Two Guys On A Porch, Jason and Bradford pour Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend and Weller Single Barrel “Orange Label”, light up a Padrón 50th Anniversary cigar, and talk about the line between enjoying something and becoming consumed by it.
From bourbon collecting and baseball cards to golf, flying, hunting, and even work, the conversation turns to a bigger question: When does a hobby stop being something you enjoy and start becoming part of your identity?
Bradford shares why golf was never really about golf—it was about spending four hours with someone he cared about. Jason reflects on why hobbies, careers, and achievements can never fully define who we are, especially when life changes and those things are taken away.
Hobbies can bring joy, challenge, connection, and meaning. But when they begin competing with family, priorities, relationships, or identity, something has shifted.
So open the bottle. Enjoy the hobby. Share it with someone. Just don’t let it become the thing that defines you.
We came for the bourbon, but stayed for the conversation.

Porch Picks: $11 vs. $1,000: The Old Fitzgerald Price Is Right
How much better should a $1,000 bourbon taste than an $11 bottle?
In this Porch Picks, Jason and Bradford play their own version of The Price Is Right, working their way through the Old Fitzgerald lineup from low to medium to high.
They start with the recently re-released Old Fitzgerald Prime at just $11, step up to the 7-Year Bottled in Bond at around $70, and then pour the 19-Year Old Fitzgerald Decanter Series, a bottle that can run anywhere from $800 to well over $1,000.
Same Old Fitzgerald family. Same wheated bourbon heritage. Very different price tags.
And just when it seems they’ve reached the top, Jason brings out something truly special: Old Fitzgerald distilled in 1957 and bottled in 1969—whiskey distilled during Pappy Van Winkle’s lifetime that today can command thousands of dollars.
So does the $1,000 bottle blow away the $11 bottle? Or is the best whiskey simply the whiskey you enjoy?

We live in a distracted, disjointed world. Our phones are always within reach, the next scroll is always waiting, and one commonly cited study puts the average attention span on a screen task at just 47 seconds. So what exactly is happening to our ability to pay attention?
Jason and Bradford pour Peerless Toasted Bourbon and a Yellowstone Single Barrel, light up a remarkable Byron Reserva cigar, and promptly demonstrate the problem by getting distracted themselves.
But somewhere between bourbon tasting, matching socks, and Kimber sleeping through most of the conversation, things get more serious. They talk about phones as an escape, the constant pull of stimulation, the example parents set for their kids, and the value of intentionally creating space for silence and real conversation.
Maybe the answer isn't figuring out how to consume more. Maybe it's learning how to slow down long enough to pay attention—to our kids, our friends, the world around us, and the conversation right in front of us.
Pour something good. Put down the phone. Go sit on the porch.
We came for the bourbon, but stayed for the conversation.

Who are the men in your life who would show up when it really matters? Share this episode with them now!
Jason and Bradford open Season Three of Two Guys On A Porch with a question that sounds a little morbid—but gets straight to the heart of friendship:
Who will carry your casket?
Not just who knows you. Not just who grabs a drink with you. Who knows you well enough to tell you the truth, ask the hard question, walk with you through difficult seasons, and still be standing there years later?
In this episode, Jason and Bradford talk about the friendships that have shaped their own lives, why shared experiences matter, and why real friendship takes honesty, vulnerability, and intentionality. Jason makes the point that if a man can name six true friends, that may be evidence of a life well lived.
And because those kinds of friends deserve a proper toast, the guys pour three very different “toast-worthy” whiskeys: Frank August Small Batch, an 11-Year Willett Purple Top, and Heaven Hill 19-Year Wheat Whiskey—working their way from a great everyday bottle to pours worthy of marking a life well lived.
Along the way, they talk about friendships for a season versus friendships for life, the importance of having friends who will tell you the truth in love, and the reality that meaningful male friendship rarely happens by accident. In a world where it has become increasingly easy for men to live like islands, friendship has to become intentional.
So pull up a chair, pour something worth toasting, and ask yourself:
We came for the bourbon, but stayed for the conversation.

What happens when a brand believes the things we use should carry stories, not just wear out?
Jason and Bradford take Two Guys On A Porch on the road for a field-trip edition from the brand-new Ball and Buck flagship store in Nashville, Tennessee, with founder Mark Bollman IV.
Ball and Buck is built around a simple idea: make things well enough that they become part of your story. Heirloom-grade clothing and gear, rooted in generations of American sporting tradition, designed to perform in the field, look just as good back in town, and someday be handed down with a few stories attached.
Mark shares how time spent hunting with his grandfather—and a jacket passed down through his family—helped shape a brand focused on craftsmanship, durability and preserving the sporting lifestyle. As he puts it, when something lasts long enough, it stops being just a product and becomes a kind of journal of the places you've been.
That philosophy fits the Porch pretty well.
The guys talk waxed cotton, field gear, why relationships matter more than simply filling shelves, and the collaborations Ball and Buck chooses because they believe in the people behind the brands—not just the products.
Naturally, there’s also bourbon.
Jason, Bradford and Mark pour Blade and Bow, talk about its connection to the old Stitzel-Weller Distillery, and leave behind a bottle of the Two Guys On A Porch Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel for future clubhouse conversations.
And “clubhouse” may be the best way to describe the new Nashville location. There’s sporting apparel and gear, high-end shotguns and rifles, a barbershop, places to sit and stay awhile—and a completely restored 1981 Jeep Scrambler built in collaboration with Bird Buggy that has enough horsepower to make Bradford reconsider several financial decisions.
Because Ball and Buck isn't really about nostalgia.
It's about taking what was worth preserving from the past, making it work for today, and building something good enough to still matter tomorrow.
Field tested. Quality proven. Stories earned.

The bourbon may have started the conversation.

Blanton’s may be one of the most recognizable bottles in bourbon—but for Jason, it’s more than that. It’s still the “plumb line” he uses to measure just about everything else.
On this Porch Picks from Two Guys On a Porch, Bradford comes back from the Kentucky Bourbon Trail with stories from Buffalo Trace Distillery, some surprisingly reasonable gift-shop prices, and one long-overdue gift for Jason: a barrel stave for his collection of Blanton’s horse toppers.
The guys talk Blanton’s Single Barrel, Weller Antique 107, bourbon hunting, collecting all eight letters that spell BLANTON’S, and the strangely difficult pursuit of finding the right second “N.”
It’s a quick conversation about bourbon, friendship, tiny metal horses, and why some bottles never really leave your rotation—even after your palate changes.
Whiskey for the men. A stave for the horses. Sounds about right.

Jason and Bradford settle back to the porch and continuing conversation with pastor and author Scott Sauls in this episode of Two Guys On A Porch. They explore New Riff, E.H. Taylor Small Batch, and Van Winkle 13-Year Rye. midlife, friendship, contentment, faith, and what happens when life does not go according to plan.
The conversation moves from divorce, disappointment, and letting go of control to the growing search among men for deeper community and more honest relationships. Scott offers his perspective on suffering, mystery, mercy, and why having fewer answers does not necessarily mean having less faith.
Along the way, Jason, Bradford, and Scott compare New Riff bourbon, E.H. Taylor Small Batch, and Van Winkle 13-Year Rye—leading to plenty of disagreement, bourbon corrections, and a few reminders that Jason prefers technical accuracy.
